Forerunner 305 GPS
The GPS on the Forerunner 305 is phenomenal, especially when
compared to the previous versions of GPS wrist-mounts.
The previous versions such as the 301 Garmin GPS units were
bulky and cumbersome leaving you feeling like you were carrying
around a full size car GPS unit.
The 305 Forerunner weighs only 1 pound and
measures 4 inches by 4 inches, leaving you a much lighter wrist
and a much more fun run.
GPS Performance
The best part of the 305 Forerunner
is that it has a high-sensitivity SiRFstar III GPS receiver
built right in. The SiRFstar III allows you to both tack
and maintain a lock on your position better than anything built
previously. You can start tracking and running almost
immediately after getting the 305 after a quick charge.
The satellite acquisition improves as you keep using it and
it's nearly instaneous once you've tried it a few
times.
The 305 garmin forerunner allows you to run through trees,
thick brush and off-road almost anywhere you want. It
won't lose tracking even if you're on a bike or a similar fast
moving vehicle, which is pretty impressive.
The simple docking cradle makes charging and data
connectivity a snap.
While the Forerunner 305 isn't billed as a GPS
navigation device, it does have some rudimentary mapping,
waypoint marking, and routing capabilities. In addition to
marking locations along your journey, you can zoom in or out of
a simple map that displays your current direction and path.
There's also a "go to location" feature that routes you back to
your starting location, or to any location you have defined.
Once you have defined several locations, you can save this
information as a route, allowing you to travel the same path in
the future. As you'll see below, the 305's new "Courses"
feature gives you new levels of control over how you define
your favorite runs and rides.
